Our Story
Who We Are
Sonstorm Studio has deep roots in the Memphis music scene. The studio is housed in the same facility where Cotton Row Recording once operated as a staple in the Memphis Music community for over 40 years. The previous owner, Niko Lyras, played an integral part in Memphis music and helped shape the sound of the city. Serving as a go-to spot for early hip-hop, R&B, soul, blues, gospel, rock, and pop artists, Cotton Row was home to legendary artists. Pretty much anyone you can name, across any genre, have recorded here. "There's so much history in the walls" says current owner and founder of SonStorm Studio, Walter Person. He practically grew up in this very studio - his father was a musician who would bring him to sessions as a child. He later spent time recording and producing his own music at the studio. Later on, while working towards a degree in Recording Technology at the University of Memphis, he would do his internships there at the studio. This eventually earned him a position as staff engineer at the studio while continuing to build his own reputation as a producer/engineer in his home studio. It all culminated in 2021 when Walter acquired the building and made it the new home of Sonstorm Studio.
